I Can Has Table Saw

Thursday evening, a brand-spanking-new Ridgid R4512 table saw alighted on my front porch. If that weren’t enough, the really exciting part is that Ridgid provided the saw so I could demonstrate it on Furnitude. (If you look real close on the right side of the photo above, that’s Buster the cat looking on in disbelief.)

The box indicates that the saw weighs 266.76 pounds, and I felt every ounce of it. The delivery truck didn’t have a gate lift, so the driver and I and a neighbor wrestled it down to the street, then lugged it up two runs of steps to our porch and into our living room. One thing I can report is that everything seems to have survived shipping in good shape. Also, it has that new table saw smell.

I contacted several manufacturers about writing reviews of their table saws. Most ignored me. A couple of them declined, which I totally respect. Ridgid is the one that came through. I really appreciate their willingness to take a chance on me. Just to be up front, when I write about something a company has given me, I will always disclose how I got it.

That said, in the coming days and weeks I will write an unboxing post about the R4512 (including lots of photos) and probably several posts about setting it up, tuning it, testing it and using it. I hope to do a couple videos, too. My next tasks are to make my way through the instruction book, assemble the stand and stockpile enough beer to coax my friends into helping me move this beast down to the basement. I now have absolutely no excuse not to make furniture.

The second piece of news is that I'm giving Furnitude a bit of a redesign in the next couple weeks. I hope to make it look a little better and be easier to use. So if you visit and things look weird (more so than usual), that means it's under construction.

Thank you,
The Management

Copy Me Challenge Link Party!

 Copy Me Challenge

It's finally here! The official Copy Me! Challenge linkup, a la Mustard Seed Style.

Do you think you know my style?  Do you think you can emulate it?

The time has come to put your Mustard Seed savvy to the test!

How to play?

Simply link up a post that you think resembles my style. Your post can be inspired by this competition or you may enter an older post.  Just link back, so others know what you're up to!  Feel free to enter multiple projects as well.

How is the winner chosen?

I will select the top five links that I feel captured the look and feel of my style.  I will then turn it over to Donna to select the grand winner.

What's the prize?

OK.  Truth time.  I haven't picked one out yet!!  Give me a break. I'm a busy girl.  :)  I can tell you generally that the winner will receive a box of goodies similar to my "Miss Mustard Seed in a Box" prize, but even better!  Think Bakelite, Ironstone, feed sacks, sheet music, maybe something custom made by me. A box of things I love and would have in my own home.  Maybe even things from my own home!  In addition, you'll get a big feature on my blog.

The party will be open for one week, so you have plenty of time to put something together if you want to play along.

If you created a Funky Junk inspired project, go over to Donna's to link up there.
I can't wait to see my style through your eyes!

Desk & Ottoman Transformations

I'm always ramping up for something, aren't I?  What was a "down" retail time for me last year is craziness this year.  Every February, The Old Lucketts Store holds their biggest sale of the year...The Ground Hog Day Sale.  Brilliant, isn't it?  So, instead of taking a little time out, R and R, and work a little on my own home, I finished four pieces of furniture in the last two days.  Whew!

This desk and slipcovered ottoman are the latest projects.  I just dropped them off this evening in the room I share with Karen.

This desk was black, beatup and missing a drawer.

The ottoman was...well...ugly.

I stripped the paint off the desk top to reveal a beautiful wood grain.  It was then finished with dark walnut stain and a coat of paste wax for protection and luster.  My husband made a new drawer and I added vintage style glass knobs

The base was painted in...you guessed it...Creamy by Sherwin Williams.  ProClassic is my favorite.  I didn't want to distress this piece, since it was black underneath, so I hit the edges lightly with a dry brush and antiquing glaze.  It gives the illusion that the edges were sanded to expose natural wood.

A light dry brushing over the entire piece brings out the imperfections and celebrates them.

I covered the ottoman in drop cloths with the same gathering technique I used on my French chair.  I won't be repeating the double-ruffle with canvas any time soon.  I broke four needles on this skirt!  I love the sort of slouchy, yet chic look I achieved, though.

I bought the lantern at 85% off due to three missing panes of glass.  Sometimes compromising on a piece isn't compromising at all.  You hardly notice they are missing.

The skirt on the ottoman is a little wonky, but I think it sort of fits with the slouchy/chic look.  Let's hope someone else thinks so and buys it at the sale this weekend!

Make sure to come back tomorrow night to share your "Copy Me" challege projects.  The post goes up at 10:00 pm EST.

The "Copy Me" Challenge Kick Off!

Welcome to the long awaited Copy Me Challenge kickoff!

Copy Me Challenge

Donna and I challenged you to copy our style...

...and we got in on the fun.  Can I pull off Donna's funky junk style?  Did she make a slipcover or find a stash of ironstone?

It's time to find out.

Heeeeeere's Donna!

"Hey everyone! Emulating Miss Mustard Seed was a wild experience! I even brought out my glue gun and tried a new craft. But did I actually sew? You'll have to see for yourself. :)

Ready for a little fun first? Here's what you need to do...

Due to copyright regulations, not all songs are viewable on videos any longer, so here's a quick fix. Activate both start buttons at nearly the same time. They are both created to work together.

Once video starts, you can up the quality from 240 to 360.

Here's what happened to me when my own follower widget flipped to 4000.... :)

All fun aside, can I copy Miss Mustard Seed?

Not a chance.  However I gave it my best shot with things I already had. Welcome to my own Miss Mustard Seed inspired tour!

The room was softened with lots of warm whites, and more upscale furniture pieces.  The vintage singer sewing machine pays homage to MMS's incredible sewing skills.

~ The fireplace ~

I brought out the glue gun and whipped up my first ever music sheet wreath. To help balance out the darkness of the fireplace, lunch bag sections were used to create the deeper toned sections.

MMS features:

Vintage scale, ironstone, white pitcher, typography, greens, curvy lines on the mirror.

 ~ Media cabinet ~

A touch of tarnished silver along with typography, two MMS trademarks.

A small dresser received a fresh coat of white, with painted darker edging resembling a glazed effect. A cheat for the design - a stencil was used to mimic MMS' hand painted techniques. Replacing one drawer with some rustic baskets added warmth to a room of whites and also helped reduce the visual height of the dresser.

 ~ Coffee table ~

An antique white coffee table with glazed detailing groups up with other MMS inspired pieces, such as the ceramic pot.

A classic looking tray was created out of a cabinet door decorated with not sheet music, but rather...

... vintage farm receipts written by my dad. This hit a music sheet feel, yet was also inspired from MMS' love for old letters. The yellowed patina on the receipts is amazing!

MMS's love for black and white photography and unexpected surprises came out in this little vignette alongside the tray.

 ~ Chair ~

A light wing chair 'resembles' a white slip cover. The paisley red touch was a direct reflection to MMS' guestroom colours. And the final touch? The white pillow got a MMS style karate chop in the center. :)

A wicker basket dresses up the firewood storage. (vs. my Coke crate)

A vintage child's camisole is a direct influence on MMS' collection of antique children's dresses.

I hope you enjoyed my version of a MMS influenced room. I had a blast!  I can't wait to see what you came up with!"

Oh...the scale, the wreath!  Love it all!

The part where she looks at her son in the video cracked me up and she has no idea how accurate that morning hair was.  I can rock a pretty awesome blonde afro in the morning.

If you'd like to check out how my Funky Junk inspired project turned out, visit Donna's blog right now.  I made a video as well.  I did not use a Canadian accent, though, because I thought I would insult all of my northern neighbors and maybe some people in the Dakotas.

Are you ready to share your projects?  No video necessary!  Just link up a project that was inspired by this challenge or that fits one of our styles.  Miss Mustard Seed inspired projects will be linked here and Funky Junk inspired projects will be linked up there.

The link party starts this Friday night at 10:00 pm EST instead of my usual Furniture Feature Friday.  It will be open for one week, so you have plenty of time to enter your project.   Finalists and grand winners will be announced on both blogs shortly after the party closes.

What will the "grand winner" win at each blog?  You have to come to the link parties to find out, but it's going to be good stuff!

See you then!

How to find the best stuff on Craigs List

I'm assuming most of you have heard of Craigslist and for those who haven't, you're about to thank me.

Craigslist is a free online classified site where you can find all kinds of goodies.  Don't be scared away by things like "The Craigslist Killer" and some of the weird spam that's in the listings.  The majority of transactions are between two very normal people who just want to buy something, get rid of something, find someone, hire someone, etc.  It is an awesome resource, especially for those of us who are thrifty girls.

Here are my secrets to finding the best stuff without breaking the bank.

Check often:
It's like hitting a flea market when it first opens or digging through "the cart" at Goodwill that holds the contents that were just priced and haven't hit the sales floor, yet.  You have to catch the best things right when they're posted, because they might not last long.

Click everything (almost):
Remember that not everyone knows what they're talking about.  If someone lists a "Victorian arm chair", it may really be French provincial and they just don't know it. I've also seen some listings that get me really excited only to end up greatly disappointed.  You just don't know if you don't look at it.

Ask for pictures:
I really hate it when people don't post pictures on their listings, but it can sometimes be a good thing.  I requested a picture of a "$30 buffet" listed a couple of months ago.  I received the picture and it was a solid wood, vintage French provincial buffet.  It would've been gone if there was a picture, but most people don't bother to ask.

Do your homework:
Know what you're looking for.  If you need a piece for a specific spot, make sure you take measurements and ask for them if they aren't provided in the post.  Ask questions like, "Are the legs sturdy?",  "Are the drawers dovetailed?", "Is it solid wood?", "Is it from a non-smoking home?", "Do the drawers work properly?"  Don't be afraid to lose the piece.  If you can't get these answers, just keep looking.

Know your key search terms:
There are a lot of listings, so I narrow it down by using my favorite key word searches.  "French"  "Dresser"  "Chair"  "Antique" and "Vintage"

Don't waste time:
It might be tempting to look at the $1200 bedroom suite or to check out the $20 dining set that's a four hour drive away, but it can really be a waste of time.  Only look at posts that you might realistically buy.  I generally don't look at any listings that are over $150 or over an hour drive.

Be a good buyer:
There isn't a place to leave feedback on Craigslist, but it's still a good idea to be a good buyer.  If you ask questions of a seller, make sure you follow up whether you're interested or not.  If you say you're going to buy something...buy it.  When I e-mail with people about a piece, I always let them know I buy from CL all the time and I always show up with cash in hand.  People are more willing to negotiate, hold a piece for you or sell to you again if you're nice to work with.  I've even had people e-mail me when they are going to sell other pieces they think I might want to buy.

Don't buy what you don't want:
When I went to buy my first French provincial dining set, I was very excited at the picture, but when I saw it in person, it was a different story.  The piece was described as "a set in mint condition".  It wasn't a set and it wasn't in mint condition.  I felt stuck.  I sighed and looked at my feet and knew I needed to say something.  I hated the chairs.  I didn't want the chairs.  "Can I just buy the table?"  "Sure."  So, I just bought the table.  Don't feel obligated to buy anything.  Just say thanks and be on your way if you don't want it.

Be safe:
I don't want to bring anyone down, but you do have to keep your personal safety in mind.  I don't ever go to pick up furniture by myself.  It's just not smart.  Remember that you are going into a stranger's home with cash.  Make sure someone is watching your back.  If a situation feels sketchy, just back out.  It's not worth it.

To show you the results of my method, here are a couple of my favorite CL finds.

My dining room set was $100 on Craigslist for six sturdy chairs, the table and table pads.  Of course, it was speckled and orange when I bought it, but I can fix that kind of thing.  :)

My amazing French provincial dresser was only $35.  I was able to buy the matching highboy a few months later and then recently swapped for the night stand as well!  I told you that being a good buyer can pay off.

Do you have any Craigslist secrets to share?

What is your favorite find?
