Dresser Makeover & New Signs

Oh, I have so much to share, I'm about to burst!!  We had the glitter letter workshop today, I have an exciting event with The Graphics Fairy coming up, I have been using every spare minute to make Christmas ornaments and decor to sell, and I scored some awesome furniture on Thursday.  I'll share it all soon, but tonight, I'm tired, so I'm just going to show my dresser makeover and the two new signs I made for the shop.

Do you remember this dresser?  I bought it at a yard sale a few weeks ago.  It was in great structural condition and someone had even sanded it down for me!  That might be a minus for some people, but it was a huge plus for me. 

I painted it with a brush (the old fashioned way), sanded it heavily, and followed it with a rub of dark walnut stain. I waxed the top with Johnson's Paste Wax to seal and protect it. Glass knobs add a little sparkle and balance out the "shabbiness" of the piece.  (By the way, the color is Stolen Kiss by Sherwin Williams.)

I also painted two new signs.  One with a sheep on it, advertising "Spun Wool" and...

...I made a second Pig Powder sign, since the first one sold so quickly at Lucketts. 

 

I can't wait to share everything else with you, but I've got to get back to work on my ornaments!

Another exciting thing happened today...I got to hang out with Karen (The Graphics Fairy) and we clicked immediately.  We spent about two hours chatting it up while my kiddos played on the playground and ate macaroni and cheese.  We are joining forces on an upcoming event that I'll share about, soon!

Furniture Feature Friday - Favorties and A Link Party

This week, the theme for my favorites is the pairing of wood and paint.  I love a rich wood top and a creamy base on a piece of furniture.  It's rich, practical, and really easy to achieve. 

Kelli from ReStore, one of my new blog friends, transformed a neglected buffet into a real stunner.  Why, it looks almost exactly like my dresser, so of course I love it!  This girl does great work and takes beautiful photos...and she only has 17 followers.  Can you help her out? 

Melissa from Greener Grass turned a cheap, Ikea craft table into an expensive looking piece.  I love how the dark stain brought out the beauty in this wood.  Great work!

Shadow Box & An Answer

I was looking through my pictures last night and realized I never shared my shadow box project with you.  I worked on it during the "Lucketts Frenzy" in August, so I didn't take before pictures and I totally forgot to even write about it. 

I found this tired and sad looking shadow box at an antique store for practically nothing.  The frame was oak and dry.  The interior had a piece of black velvet sloppily stapled inside. It was a mess, but I could see the potential. 

I started out by cleaning it up and removing the black velvet and staples.  I then stained the frame in my very favorite dark walnut stain and finished it off with wipe-on poly.  My husband cut a piece of bead board to fit the back of the interior and I painted it out in Creamy by Sherwin Williams.  I then added a glass knob to the top, so one could hang a baby dress or wreath in it.  

The baby dress was my very first sale at Lucketts and the shadow box sold later on the morning of the first day.  This would be easy to make yourself with a cool frame and a simple box construction.  The frame can be attached with hinges on one side and a clasp on the other. 

So, now for the answer to the "what is it" question.  First of all, you girls cracked me up!  I was laughing so hard at some of the guesses.  They were funny, but they were all wrong.  It actually is not a very functional piece.  It's a visual aid that would've been used by an architect or artist for sketching round objects like tires.  Now, that's what the vendor told me, so who knows if she was just being clever or if that was the actual use, but it sounds good to me.  I'm not sure what I'm going to do with it, but I hope I never have to use it for some of the suggestions (ahem...hemorrhoid doughnut.)

What is it?

When I went to the Apple Harvest Festival (a big deal in these parts), I wasn't expecting to find anything I would want to buy.  It's a craft fair and, even though I'm a crafty girl, I'm not big into "crafts."  I like things that are hand crafted, hand made, not "crafts."  Do you know what I mean?  Well, in the little corner of one booth there was a small display of antique pieces.  I found three unusual things that caught my eye. 

The first is this metal plaque with the date Jule 30, 1947.  Now, I'm not 100% sure of what this is, but it looks like a marker for a house stating when it was built. 

What do you think?  Any other ideas?

The second piece is a little more obvious...

It's a hat form.  It's apparently a form that was used to make the slouched cap style that was worn in the Civil War.  I don't think this form is that old, but who knows?  Any ideas?

And this last one had me totally stumped and I had to ask the vendor what it was.  Does anyone know?

Last thing, I want to say a thank you to Jennifer, Kate, and Laura for sending me even more sheet music!  I was just sorting it all today and I ended up with one huge rubber bin, two boxes, and one small bin packed full of sheet music.  There are some awesome ladies out there.
